Did you know that . . . . ?
- For decades the Nova Scotia – Gambia Association (NSGA) has been one of the most far-reaching, innovative and effective international development organization operating in Gambia.
- NSGA has conducted more than 40 multi-year projects in Gambia worth millions of dollars, but the program which defined our “brand” was school-based Peer Health Education.
- NSGA has partnered from time to time with Saint Mary’s, Dalhousie and Mount Saint Vincent universities in Nova Scotia delivering innovative development programs in The Gambia.
- In 1994-96 NSGA implemented a comprehensive health and nutrition program for 200 street children, known as Almudos, in Gambia and ultimately enabled the children to return to their families and home villages.
- NSGA conceived, developed and managed in partnership with Saint Mary’s University a five-year (1995-2000) University Extension Program, which enabled Gambians for the first time to access affordable university education in their own country and led to the establishment of the University of The Gambia.
- More than 500 Canadians, including teachers, university professors, doctors, medical students, nurses, health educators, development workers, and other skilled personnel, have worked in NSGA projects and programs in Gambia for periods ranging from months to years.
- NSGA’s full-time local staff in The Gambia and Sierra Leone reached a high of 102 in year 2006.
- In the year 2020 NSGA closed its office and operations in Nova Scotia and enabled a Gambian Board of Directors with a Gambian Executive Director to take over ownership and management of NSGA's programs, projects and other assets in The Gambia -- assisted by a $50,000 transition fund raised by long-time members of the Association in Nova Scotia.
